Review: Speedlink Omnivi Gaming Mouse

The OMNIVI Gaming Mouse by Speedlink is both impressive to look at and use.

This hefty metallic mouse has no less than 10 buttons which are adjustable with macros.  That’s pretty impressive and certainly useful for those who prefer finding buttons rather than keys for the many different tasks in-game.

The aluminium body means that it’s a little more weighty than a plastic mouse, though still only 145g in total, and this also makes it feel more sturdy, though it doesn’t stop this mouse being quick to glide across a mat. The smooth operation of the pointer is down to a resolution of 12,000dpi and a good quality optical sensor, as well as a decent ergonomic design.  You do need to get used to the jutting angles, but they’re designed in such a way as to help find the buttons and the rubberised elements on top, as well as on the scroll wheel, help with grip and comfort.  Buttons click with a good quality feel to the switches and have a good reaction time.

If that wasn’t enough to sway you, the 7 colour adjustable illuminated body can match your PC setup as well.  All of this, alongside the macros and the DPI settings can be controlled with the easy to use software.

The Macro controller gives you the option of saving a bunch of different settings to a profile for a particular game, including key mappings.  It’s pretty intuitive to use and shows exactly where you’ve mapped them to on the mouse.

The bulkiness of the mouse and the thick wire, which sometimes meant that the mouse moved on its own accord, do count against those who would rather go wireless or have something a bit smaller, but given the fact that this has 10 programmable buttons and a solid dpi and reaction time mean that these issues are negligible for those who want to be competitive in gaming.  Speedlink are slowly making a name for themselves with their line of gaming hardware and the Omnivi is certainly a great choice for the pro gamer.
