USB Hard Drive support finally comes to PS4

The next PS4 and PS4 Pro Firmware update, 4.50, will see the console finally supporting USB 3.0 external hard drives for the first time.

The feature has been an item which has been constantly requested since the PS4’s launch and one that the Xbox One has already been able to take advantage of for a while.  It means games can be installed and run off the external drive, putting an end to all those full internal drive woes.

The PS4 was previously only able to update its storage space by changing the internal drive, something that Sony made quite easy to do, but an external drive is far easier to manage and doesn’t restrict the size of the hard drive based on the physical size.

In addition, the new firmware will also feature custom backgrounds from your screenshots taken with Shareplay and 3D Blu-ray support for playing on the Playstation VR.  There are also changes to the quick menu for easier chat and party features.

Those in the Firmware beta programme should have the update rolling out to them now, everyone else will need to wait for Sony’s official release, which hasn’t been set yet.
